The American Psychological Association (APA) psychology conference takes place August 3-5, 2023. Many of us are always trying to get more continuing ed credits. This conference has a ton of great continuing ed opportunities in the fun and historic city that is the capitol city of Washington, DC.

Trainings range from forums on theory behind new and existing therapies, to assessment, to statistics, to cultural competency trainings. Additional intriguing talks on cutting edge research and concepts round out many events. Many of these talks and forums are eligible for continuing ed credits in multiple formats. Most states allow these trainings to apply to multiple degrees in mental health, not just psychology (check your individual state boards)!

Pros: So many options…. APA provides extensive options in its trainings on a whole range of topics. There is also the option to attend multiple continuing ed sessions for one modest price (in addition to convention registration price). Attendees also attend longer individually priced full continuing education workshops. Virtual sessions are also offered. Some trainings are led by individuals with some pretty impressive credentials and experience. Many trainings have high emphasis and discussion of applications to clinical practice. And DC is a fun city with plenty to do and see!

Limits: The virtual session docket has not yet been released. This psychology conference offers fewer virtual trainings than in-person ones with less freedom in choice of virtual trainings. This is a downside for those who have enjoyed the convenience of virtual trainings). APA trainings can often range in their degree of research support. Some offer highly research-based trainings and others much less so. (Certain conferences have more heavy emphasis on research support.) So be sure to read into each training-of-interest beforehand.

A well-versed conference in a great city! And for clinicians out there who like to explore the city a conference is in more than the conference itself, this one ain’t bad.
