Symptoms of ADHD can contribute to so many difficulties. Organization, managing tasks, and emotional difficulties name just a few of those. In rides tech to save the village…. (I think we’ve seen this movie before?). Companies put forth the ADHD watch and other devices as a solution. But do these pricey devices work for what they claim to or are they just “snake oil”?

Tech companies and major retailers have made claims about the effectiveness of these devices for ADHD. These gadgets claim to provide organizational tools that will combat attentional difficulties in ADHD. For example, digital calendars and alarms are meant to help individuals manage a variety of daily tasks.

Research evidence is lacking. Limited initial evidence available is somewhat mixed. One pilot study found some benefits for study participants. But some found the watch to be just another distraction. Still others did not form a long-term habit for using it. This study had a very small number of participants, so any conclusions would be highly tentative.

Additionally, some experts hypothesize that the ADHD watch and similar gadgets may only provide a short-term “fix”. That is, they may lead to missed opportunities to build one’s own skills to address attentional difficulties (e.g., organizational or time management skills).

Medications continue to be the front line approach for ADHD’s attentional difficulties. And CBT for ADHD is another effective method for addressing mood and emotional difficulties associated with ADHD. CBT also appears effective for building organizational management and social skills impacted by ADHD.

It can be tempting to suggest using these and other devices to our clients. More evidence could show these devices are helpful. However, it is helpful for clients to know the downsides, especially when many of these devices are expensive. Research currently suggests that our clients might benefit from some good ole’ healthy skepticism.
