Luck of the Irish, aye? Well in this case, we could call it skill. The Belfast-based startup Neurovalens has been developing a portable device that uses noninvasive electrical stimulation. This new technology provides targeted brain stimulation for anxiety, depression, weight loss, and other conditions.
The device provides an alternative to pharmacological interventions that individuals can use on their own. And it is shown to be safe in the short- and long-term.
The device appears to work in a way similar to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). That is, it applies electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. This process is meant to be a kind “jump start” to different areas or groups of cells in the brain. It boosts the activity of brain cells that often, in a sense, deactivate due to the effects of certain disorders like depression.
The startup making the device boasts a slightly unique approach, however. It aims to target specific areas of the brain responsible for stress regulation, metabolic control, and circadian rhythms. The company is also developing devices for brain stimulation for anxiety-related concerns, like PTSD and chronic pain.
Modern alternative approaches to many mental health difficulties have become increasingly popular. Similar to transcranial magnetic stimulation (which has extensive research support), this product is shying away from taking a “wellness approach”. They are working to market their device as a more legitimate medical product.
Therefore, Neurovalens is taking a highly research-based approach by submitting its product to empirical trials and FDA approval in US. They are also seeking medical device approval in the UK. The start-up has raised almost 30 million dollars in investment funding to continue to develop these devices.
How costly and accessible will these devices be? Time will tell. Otherwise “the future” of home-based devices for brain stimulation appears to almost be here. If these devices prove as effective as techniques like TMS, it could mean wonders for a variety of mental health and related conditions.
